GETTING STARTED
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?Jefferson County 4-H Shooting Sports welcomes youth who want to learn in a safe, structured and encouraging environment. No competition experience is necessary to get started. AGES 8–18Participants must be at least 8 years old and in the 3rd grade through age 18, based on 4-H eligibility rules. BEGINNERS WELCOMEYoung athletes can learn the fundamentals and build their skills through structured instruction and practice. SAFETY FOCUSEDSafe equipment handling, range procedures and responsible behavior are emphasized throughout every discipline.
SOMETHING FOR EVERY YOUNG ATHLETE
4-H SHOOTING SPORTS DISCIPLINESJefferson County 4-H offers several shooting sports disciplines, giving youth opportunities to discover their interests, develop new skills and grow through practice and competition. ARCHERYLearn proper form, range safety, equipment knowledge and competitive fundamentals while developing focus, confidence and consistency. AIR RIFLEDevelop marksmanship fundamentals, shooting positions, accuracy and safe equipment handling in a controlled environment. AIR PISTOLBuild safe pistol-handling habits while learning sight alignment, trigger control, accuracy and competitive fundamentals. BB GUNAn excellent introduction to shooting sports with an emphasis on safety, fundamentals, shooting positions and basic marksmanship. SMALLBORE RIFLE (.22)Youth learn precision rifle fundamentals and shooting positions while preparing for county, district and state-level competition.

FROM FIRST PRACTICE TO COMPETITION4-H Shooting Sports gives young athletes the opportunity to build skills at their own pace. Participants begin with safety and fundamentals, develop through regular practice and may advance into organized competition. 1
LEARN SAFELYBegin with safety, range procedures, equipment knowledge and the fundamentals of the chosen discipline. 2
BUILD SKILLSRegular practice helps develop proper technique, consistency, confidence and good shooting habits. 3

Smallbore Rifle generally meets at the GTGC Rifle Range on Saturday mornings during the spring season. BB GUN & SPORTER AIR RIFLE

OPPORTUNITIES TO COMPETE
The Smallbore Rifle project culminates in county and district competition, where local youth compete with other counties across Southeast Texas. Additional competitive opportunities may also be available through Texas 4-H Shooting Sports.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE PROGRAM
SAFETY, INSTRUCTION & RESPONSIBILITYSafety is at the heart of 4-H Shooting Sports. Young athletes learn in a structured environment with trained adult instructors who emphasize safe equipment handling, proper technique, responsibility and sportsmanship. SAFETY FIRSTParticipants learn range rules, safe equipment handling and proper procedures before developing shooting skills. TRAINED INSTRUCTORSAdult volunteers receive specialized training to help provide safe, structured and age-appropriate instruction. RESPONSIBILITYYouth develop discipline, focus, good judgment and respect for equipment, instructors and fellow athletes. SPORTSMANSHIPCompetition is about more than scores. Participants learn teamwork, respect and how to compete with character.
